A Child of the King Hymn Lyrics

My Father is rich in houses and lands,
He holdeth the wealth of the world in His hands!
Of rubies and diamonds, of silver and gold
His coffers are full, He has riches untold.

CHORUS
I’m a child of the King!
A child of the King!
With Jesus my Saviour,
I’m a child of the King!

My Father’s own Son, the Saviour of men,
Once wandered o’er earth as the poorest of them;
But now He is reigning forever on high,
And will give me a home in heav’n by and by.

I once was an outcast, stranger on earth,
A sinner by choice, and an alien by birth!
But I’ve been adopted, my name’s written down,
An heir to a mansion, a robe, and a crown.

A tent or a cottage, why should I care?
They’re building a palace for me over there!
Though exiled from home, yet still I may sing:
All glory to God, I’m a child of the King!

About the hymn

Harriett E. Buell wrote the poem The Child of a King in 1877, inspired by her reflections on the believer’s spiritual adoption and inheritance in Christ. The poem first appeared in the Northern Christian Advocate on February 1, 1877. Shortly afterward, John B. Sumner, a music teacher and composer, came across the poem. At the time, Sumner was seeking a gospel song to honor the memory of his friend and mentor, Philip Bliss, who had recently passed away. He felt that Buell’s words perfectly fit the need and composed music to accompany them.

Without Harriett Buell’s prior knowledge, the song was publicly sung at a Sunday evening service in Manlius, New York. The result was the cherished hymn A Child of the King, which has since become a staple in Christian worship for its celebration of spiritual identity and divine grace.
